Getting signed out every 10 mins or so if not active, and other things

This is a real pain, the phone rings, someone comes to the door, or you have something else to do that's far more important than constantly using TheFilter's site, and you get signed out. You might have opened a few windows in TheFilter and they all need opening again, a simple refresh after signing in on one window does not sign them all back in. This is either very lazy programming or a sense of importance that will not go down well if it's like this when released publically. I like the idea of TheFilter, but this problem along with very odd recommendations ( how much does Paris Hilton, her agent or label pay to get recommended as being similar to Chicken Lips?! / as well as the repeated recommendations of some albums that I've rated as lower than 20% on the sliding scale, same reasons?) TheFilter being a real resource hog amongst other things makes using this beta something that only a paid tester would find the time for. I'm using Firefox 2.0.0.14 on XP.

A lot more work is needed on the music recommendations, a lot of artists I've checked out on here have no linked recommendations or some very bizarre ones, meaning not similar at all, if this site aims to become popular it will have to cover most bases rather than the predicatable ones. A major trend in music availability since the advent of computer files, rather than hard copies, being the main format, is that there's an increased availability of genres, this needs to be reflected on this site, i.e. Dubblestandart, admittedly not household names everywhere, but well known within their genre, they are not linked to anything in the recommendations here today, 23.04.08.

Thanks for the feedback David. I am not sure what is happening with the signing out problem so  I will let other people talk on that.

The resource problem ( I assume you mean cpu) should be fixed right now - the problem was an overactive flash script which manifested on some browsers, particularly safari I think.

    For Chicken Lips I get:

    Mertro Area - Miur

    Playgroup - Make it happen

    and

    Mu - Chair girl

I dont know any of the recs, or the seed, but Paris Hilton does not appear ( it is possible her cheque bounced this week.)

We have put up a new recommendation engine in the last 12 hours  ( we are experimenting during the beta period so keep trying. The site will update daily, or every second day)

I can see the reason for  the bug with the recs for Dubblestandart - we'll try and fix that in the next day or two.

This is the kind of feedback we like, by the way,  since we do need feedback on the recs for obscure arists and tracks.

I'm still getting the auto sign out if I do nothing on thefilter site for approx 10 mins, on XP Pro and Firefox, with the latest download of thefilter. The drain on the CPU problem seems to have been sorted.

I think that the recommendations have improved, but some of the categorisations are off, Ken Boothe as electronic?

While clicking on artists listed under 'rate electronic'  I don't get the artist who's name I clicked on, e.g.. Conjure One led to Paul Oakenfold/Spektrum/ Deepest Blue on 3 seperate attempts and Tiga linked to Gadjo, and it didn't matter whether I right-clicked to open in a new tab or left clicked to open in the same tab..

The sign out problem still exists, approx every 10 mins unless I do something on the site, as i said before there is no way that I can always do this, there are more important things in life that thefilter. Unless this is sorted out I see no reason to have to put up with this hassle, I came here to try and help, but I do not have time 24/7  to pay more or less full attention to thefilter.

I wonder is it cookie related. Tree, any idea? Session timeouts should not happen if the user is autologged in. right? David, can you say what browser configuration are you running on? And what OS? Thanks

Re: Getting signed out every 10 mins or so if not active, and other things

The autologin should only fail if cookies are disabled on your browser. Occasionally I have seen it happen when the page state gets corrupted and presumably does the same to the cookie, but in principle you should only get logged out if one of these is true:

    1. The tick box to "always keep me logged in" wasn't checked, on the sign-in page
    2. Your browser has cookies disabled, or all cookies have been deleted (possibly along with all other files)
    3. Something else is deleting the cookie, like over-protective PC Security software
    4. Err..you hit the log-out button

You sound like you know what you are doing, so can you investigate if your Firefox browser has cookies enabled? To do this, go to the tools menu and select Options . Go to the privacy panel and the middle section should display your cookie preferences. Check thefilter.com has not been added to your exceptions to block, or that you have set your browser to block all cookies.

It is worth checking your PC anti-virus/secrity software doesn't have anti-cookie tendencies too. That would depend upon your exact software, but it might be worth a look.

To test if it is the site of your browser or PC configuration, could you try out other sites which have a similar login stored, or use Internet Explorer on your site for a while?

I am using Firefox 2.0.0.14 on XP SP2, the cookie settings are to 'accept from sites', and for them to be cleaned up when the browser is closed. I checked that thefilter.com was not blocked under 'Exceptions', which it was not, but I did just set it to 'allow' for this site in case that helps out. I'm pretty sure that it's not some of my security software settings that's casuing this problem, though it is almost impossible to say this for sure, 100%. I cannot say that I am totally sure that the 'keep me signed in' box was always checked on the sign in page, I think that I did check it each time, I will definitely check that this is done so from now on.

I have tried out similar sites with similar log ins, without any similar problem. I very rarely use IE, avoiding it for just about everything, even Windows updates, if I can. I'd prefer to try Opera to check if I have similar problems with thefilter before having to resort to IE, I'll report back here after using Opera, as well as Firefox, whilst checking that I check the keep signed in box and after allowing cookies from here.

Re: Getting signed out every 10 mins or so if not active, and other things

Thanks for the update. Opera is fine as alternative browser to test. I understand the IE-phobia :)

Les us know if this does continue to happen. If it does happen, can you give us an idea of your general behaviour? Do you stay on the main page or browse around on music or movie pages. What page do you usually leave it on which times out is really what we need to know.

This has happened when I've been on both the main and other pages, I have browsed the movies section, but have spent far more time in the music sections, it's happened in all sections that I've used. It did happen yesterday after I posted here, I can't remember  which pages I had open in the music section, but will try to remember to log this if it happens again. I was still using Firefox, but will try Opera over the weekend.

I've been on the site for a little over an hour now without getting logged out.  Granted, I'm on a Mac, but I'm also using Firefox.  But I have heard of this sort of thing happening to other people while on sites that are coded with .asp  So I wouldn't count it out as an end-user issue.  But at the same time, it's definitely not universal.
