Just installed the new version, being a long time user of the previous. 

Command + 1 creates the Playlist but I just can't see any autoextending behaviour neither any button/command to manually extend a playlist.

Furthermore, skipping a song doesn't remove it from the playlist anymore, sigh!!!

 Any help on this?

 Hi.

 This old player will continue to be supported, and we will eventually be working on a Version 3.0. The recs version for the new menubar application is desgined to be simpler, but I take your point on the autoextend, and will put it in in a later version.

 How about this:

Cmd-2 will extend the existing playlist based on the songs selected in the playlist ( rather than create a new playlist)

Cmd-3 will toggle Extend Playlist on or off. With some visual feedback on state. Will add to preferences as well.

I was never happy with the skip to remove option. With Cmd-2 you could create a playlist, delete what you dont want, and try again. Or try with another seed(s) in that playlis. Continue until happy. This is more than a one click approach of course, but will be for more advanced users.

 I thought the aim of the project was to create playlists that were closer to the user's taste, therefore I can't see how this could be done "without" the autodelete option.

 This morning I selected a song but the playlist that was created had nothing to do with it, with the previous thefilter.app I could orientate thefilter deleting suggestions and having continous recommendations from the server into the playlist during normal playing.

 Am I doing something wrong or misunderstood it all?

I've downloaded the Mac application, and watched it scan my 1,000 + song library. I've experimented with the Cmd - 1 to create playlists based on a highlighted song, and it works: it creates a playlist of about a dozen songs. My question is, what criteria is used to select these new playlist songs? Looking at the results, I can't see any methodology or philosophy behind the selections: they appear completely random. Is it based on rhythm, or key, or tempo, or what? Mixing my jazz and rock together isn't a problem (I do it with my own playlists) but I can't see why The Filter's suggested playlists are any more "appropriate" than what I could come up with by selecting, say, every seventeenth song.

Well the algorithm is relatively complex. We match tracks to tracks, or artists to tracks. These matchings are based on the known cross references based on sales data we have - which runs to millions or purchases ( from Nokia and others). We then do some post parsing based on your known play history ( on the site, or player), and slight randomization - because we dont want the same playlist each time. One of the things we try to insure is that the playlist is a bit ecletic, we dont try and produce more than one track per album - that is as it stands, but that last bit of processiong is up for review. Also, of course, we can only recommend from your collection. Previous results should be blocked for a time period. Would like your ideas on this. Would you prefer a more album based list - i.e. more from the same album in the same playlist at the expense of a more ecletic mix, or not, or a UI to allow you to chose?

I personally would prefer more variety, i.e., the same artist should not repeat within the playlist. But I still think that choosing every nth track would yield a playlist just as varied. I think it would be more helpful if your software could base the selections on rhythm (is that possible?): then we could have a "trance" or "mellow" or "rocking" or "workout" mix that we would want to keep and return to again and again. Otherwise, I don't see why I'd want to keep any of the playlists The Filter is generating for more than one listening session.
