    Why bother?

Was very much looking forward to the service. Therefore, I was very disappointed when it failed to deliver.

During the rating process I was asked to rate Blink 182. I give 'em a +1. I go on to rate several others more positively.

When I get to my home page I see that there is a section for listing recommended music. It can hold six spots. Apparently "The Filter" can only suggest 5. Fine. However why is "Blink 182" in the list after rating so many others more highly?

Netflix has a rating system also. One of the ways it encourages you to rate movies is that is asks you to rate movies you have just returned and it promises to 'show you two more movies you'll love." Go a head and rate Star Wars Episode 1 poorly and by gosh if Netflix doesn't suggest Episodes 2 and 3. WTF!! You have just wasted my time and I no longer trust your 'system'.

"The Filter" appears to have about as much credibility.

I will continue to mess with it now and again to see if it gets better but so far but I am not impressed or enthused.

(Also, on a technical note; I went to offer a comment on an artist when I maxed out the text area. There was no indication of the maximum size or anything but fine. However, this doesn't just prevent you from entering more characters it appears to stop accepting keystrokes altogether. Like the "Delete" key. Say, for example, if I wanted to delete some of the characters to shorten and edit my post. I had to select the text and use the 'right-click' context menu to 'Cut' the text. I am using Firefox 2 on a Windows box.)

    Re: Why bother?

The Front page recommendations are based on your ratings, as you suspect. We choose seeds from the songs, and artists you have rated, or played, or shared. The Filter does not recommend Blink-182 for Blink-182, however. What happened is that it chose from other , more higly rated,  music and found BLink-182 as a similar artist - which seems to be correct since you agree by having Blink-182 in your collection. If you download the client it and "slurp" your entire collection we wil never return songs that you own.

so the problem here is not the recommendation, but the lack of information to you the user about how we recommended . I think this should be exposed visibly in the UI, and we are going to look at it.
