This service used to be about producing meaningful playlists for my ipod and suggesting music that i dont yet own for download. Has this completely gone away as I dont see it anywhere on the new site. I assume the 'purpose' of the filter has changed to a media orientated social networking site (not interesting to me personally), but if the old functionality is still there can someone show me where it is as I actually thought it was cool.

Yes, you need to download the tools ( as we now call them). Try a download here http://www.thefilter.com/Tools/Default.aspx This tool is very simple compared to the previous application. It will read your library ( you will need to do this again even if you have the old db). We use this information to modify our recs on the site. The tool ( which appears as a background application in the Task Bar, or Status menu on the Mac) will also "scrobble" played music which should appear in the recent played list in the website. Also there is a rec engine. On the Mac if iTunes is running you can press Cmd-1 and get a recommendation based on the selected track. On Windows you can double click on the systray and automatically get a rec based on the currently playing track. MacGuy
